Wildflowers bring out the best in us, an unprecedented gift in a wild landscape. Depending on the place and the weather wildflowers are not a guarantee, and when they do grace us they don’t last for long.
This trail just outside Kanab Utah is known for its interesting sandstone structures and geological formations. But as I meandered through the sandy wash I couldn’t help but be enthralled by the blankets of wildflowers lining the way.
The vibrant blooms greeted me with open arms, demanding nothing more than my presence and to bear witness. Both of us knowing that the wouldn’t be there for long, their ephemeral existence evident as they swayed in the breeze from a passing thunderstorm.
The wildflowers' remarkable ability to flourish in unexpected places mirrors the essence of hope itself. Just as a seed can find purchase anywhere and, under the right conditions, thrive and burst into bloom, hope too can take root and grow in the most unforeseen circumstances.
Eckhart Tolle urges us to study flowers as a means of embracing the present moment. I'd add that experiencing wildflowers is a gift they offer freely.
Their beauty, fragility, and determination are bundled together in a fleeting spectacle that we can savour when we find ourselves in the right time and place. Reminding us of the simple yet profound joys of being fully present in the world around us.
