Antares is the 15th brightest star in the sky. It is bright orange, so much so that it’s name means: Not Mars.

It’s location in the constellation Scorpius means it is in close proximity to the Milky Way Core. Just to the right of it here in the Northern Hemisphere for most of the season.

But what many people don’t realize is that it’s located near a stunning cloud complex called Rho Ophiuchi.

This might be my favourite part of the night sky.

It’s relatively easy to capture, and the rewards outshine any effort and careful planning that is needed to do so.

Here you see Rho Ophiuchi rising up over a barren granite outcrop on the Atlantic Ocean. Timed just after moonset I spent a lovely evening by the ocean taking multiple images as Rho rose higher and higher.
